Overview

The town of Gainesville is in central Wyoming County, bordered to the north by Warsaw (the county seat); to the east by Castile; to the south by Pike and a small portion of Genesee Falls; and to the west by Weathersfield. The town includes the villages of Gainesville and Silver Springs, and the hamlets of Newburg and Rock Glen. Gainesville is a mainly rural area of dairy farms and forests. The ice age left behind rolling and rocky but fertile soil. Gainesville is the birthplace of David Starr Jordan, the first president of Stanford University.


Essentials

Grocery and retail shopping is a short drive north to Warsaw. There, you’ll find a Top’s Friendly Markets Store, a Save-a-Lot grocery, Lantz’s Bulk Foods and a Walmart store. The town of Gainesville Public Library is in Silver Springs. The Letchworth Central School, which encompasses more than 120 square miles and serves most of the six towns in southeastern Wyoming County, is based in Gainesville. Each of the district’s three schools is located in Gainesville. The hospital that serves the region is Wyoming County Community Hospital, which is just north in Warsaw.



Recreation & Entertainment

Fishing, hunting and other outdoor activities are the most popular options in this rural area, including places such as Wisco Creek and East Koy Creek. Silver Springs Racing has been running motocross races with the Western New York Motocross Association for more than 20 years. The Wyoming County Forest is just west of town. Just north of Gainesville, you’ll find The Stage in Warsaw, offering live music, movies, dance and live theater. Golf courses are a short drive away, to places like Warsaw and Pike. Letchworth State Park is a quick drive east, with one entrance to the gigantic park in Castile. The Wyoming County Fair is held annually in August in Pike, just south of Gainesville.



Transportation & Traffic

Route 19, which heads north-south, runs through the heart of Gainesville. Route 78, which goes east-west, connects with Route 19 just north of town..



Pros & Cons

School children won’t have far to travel, as all of the schools in the Letchworth Central School District – which encompasses more than 120 square miles – are in Gainesville. Letchworth State Park is a quick drive east, and government business is handled in Warsaw, just north of Gainesville. This is a quiet rural, farming community.
