Welcome to Hanover, NY

Overview

Hanover is a town in the northeast corner of Chautauqua County, bordered to the north by Lake Erie, to the northeast by Cattaraugus Creek and the Cattaraugus Reservation (for native Americans), to the east by Perrysburg (Cattaraugus County) and part of the Cattaraugus Reservation, to the south by Villenova and a small part of Arkwright, and to the west by Sheridan.


Essentials

Silver Creek has several stores for grocery shopping, including Tops Friendly Markets on Central Avenue, Save-A-Lot on Route 20, and JD’s Hanford Market on Route 5. Forestville has an Italian food store called Cave’s Food Center. Nearby Dunkirk has more supermarkets. Silver Creek also has a Rite Aid pharmacy, convenience stores, a surplus store and more. For a wide variety of retail shopping, there’s a Walmart Supercenter and other stores in Fredonia. McKinley Mall in neighboring Erie County is about half an hour northeast of Hanover. 



Recreation & Entertainment

Hanover is an area known for outdoor activities like fishing, hunting and camping. Forestville is home to Lana’s The Little House, a storybook English cottage. Irving is home to the Seneca Nation of Indians. Nearby are Graycliff Conservancy and Lily Dale Assembly, mentioned above. Dunkirk and Fredonia, both about 12 miles west, have more things to see and do.



Transportation & Traffic

The New York State Thruway (Route 90) and Routes 5 and 20 pass through the northern part of town. Route 39 crosses through the center of Hanover



Pros & Cons

Hanover is a small town of about 7,200 residents and the area is largely wide-open and rural. Its location on the shores of Lake Erie makes Hanover and especially the village of Silver Creek popular for water lovers.
