Overview Swillburg is a neighborhood in southeast Rochester, bordered by Field Street, South Clinton Avenue, Meigs Street and Interstate 490. It shares a commercial border with the Highland Park Neighborhood along South Clinton Avenue, and both neighborhoods often are lumped in with the South Wedge neighborhood. Swillburg’s unusual name dates back to the 19th century, when a man named George Goebel ran a prominent pig farm and collected garbage for swill for the animals’ feed. Swillburg was slated to be divided down the middle in the 1960s as part of a plan to extend an expressway. Residents banded together and fought the proposal; Otto Hendenberg Square now stands as a memorial of sorts to the man who spearheaded the fight. Today, Swillburg is a vibrant neighborhood and the home of popular attractions like the Highland Park Diner and the Cinema Theater, which draws huge crowds for its discount movies. Swillburg has a vibrant neighborhood association, and the neighborhood is within walking distance of popular neighborhoods such as Park Avenue and Monroe Avenue, as well as Cobbs Hill Park and Highland Park. Legendary musician Cab Calloway was born in the Swillburg neighborhood. Local Museums & Landmarks Two of the most popular landmarks are the Highland Park Diner and the art deco Cinema Theater, where you can see movies in a single-screen theater at discount prices. The theater has “resident cats” that wander the screening area and might cuddle up in a seat beside you. Otto Hendenberg Square pays tribute to a local resident who fought to preserve the neighborhood in the 1960s. The neighborhood has public gardens and several murals. The Rochester Museum & Science Center and the Strasenburgh Planetarium are just a mile northeast on East Avenue. The historic Mt. Hope Cemetery is about 2 miles southwest of Swillburg, and Highland Park, home of the enormously popular Lilac Festival, is about a mile south.

South Clinton, Goodman Street and nearby Monroe Avenue have several chain retailers, such as Rite Aid and 7-11, and Monroe Avenue has a collection of funky, boutique-style shops. For more extensive shopping, The Marketplace mall in Henrietta is only five miles south. Highland Hospital is on the western edge of Swillburg. Residents here are part of the Rochester City School District. McQuaid Jesuit High School in Brighton, a Catholic school, is about a mile south of Swillburg. Pros & Cons Despite the less-than-flattering name, Swillburg is a great neighborhood for city living. Many attractions are within walking distance. The neighborhood attracts young first-time home buyers as well as families and more-established residents who have lived there a long time. You’re close to two parks, a hospital and downtown.
