OverviewThe area known as Upper Monroe in southeast Rochester is centered around Monroe Avenue and represents one of the best examples of a “village” atmosphere in city living. The neighborhood has a funky, eclectic feel where you’ll find young people with colored hair and skateboards, maybe even a few Mohawks. In the Meigs-to-Oxford streets area, especially, are a number of boutiques like Aaron’s Alley and shops such as Poster Art, mixed with vibrant, low-key bars, diners, national chains such as Rite Aid and Advance Auto Parts, and some more upscale restaurants. The former Genesee Hospital, near Alexander Street, has been converted to a complex called Alexander Park. Monroe Village, bounded by Interstate 490 and Chestnut Street along Monroe, is within walking distance of the similar Park Avenue and East End neighborhoods and a short walk to downtown. There’s definitely a laid-back vibe in Monroe Village. Southeast of I-490, the area is known as Upper Monroe and has a more suburban kind of feel.
Local Museums & Landmarks
Cobbs Hill Park is within walking distance, starting at Culver Road and technically in either the Cobbs Hill or Upper Monroe neighborhoods. Pinnacle Hill, with its 748-foot summit, is the city’s highest point. The Bug Jar, close to downtown and Wadsworth Square, has been perhaps the most eclectic nightclub in the area for the past 25 years and features punk-rock and alternative musicians. The Monroe Theater is a landmark former movie house that has been vacant for a few years. Oxford Street, with its magnolia trees, is especially beautiful in the spring and summer.
