Overview Portland is a town in north-central Chautauqua County, bordered to the north by Lake Erie, to the east by the town of Pomfret and the village of Fredonia, to the south by Chautauqua and a bit of Stockton, and to the west by Westfield. Portland includes the village of Brocton and several small hamlets. Lake Erie State Park, with its lovely beaches, is in the northeast part of Portland. This is a farming community best known for its grape-growing. Portland is a small town with a few stores, but it’s close to the busier city of Dunkirk and village of Fredonia. The State University of New York at Fredonia is just minutes away. The Lakeview Shock Incarceration Facility, a minimum-security prison for non-violent offenders, is in Portland. Local Museums & Landmarks The Portland Historical Museum is open during the summer. Brocton has a green double-arch over the village’s main intersection that was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. The arch, which was put up in 1913 to commemorate Portland’s centennial, is said to be the only double-arch east of the Mississippi River.
