Welcome to Sherman, NY

Overview

Sherman is a town in southwestern Chautauqua County, bordered to the north by the town of Chautauqua, to the east by North Harmony, to the south by Clymer and to the west by Mina. Sherman includes a village also named Sherman along with one hamlet. This is a sparsely populated town of about 1,600 residents, with about half of them residing in the village. Chautauqua Lake is a short drive east of Sherman. This is a town of farms and mainly outdoor attractions, like Night Lights at the Heron, in which participants walk a lighted one-mile trail lined with artistic expressions.


Essentials

Sherman has a small business district that includes Mack’s Hometown Market, a grocery store on Church Street. For a wider variety of grocery shopping options, the village of Mayfield in Chautauqua has a Tops Friendly Markets store on Erie Street. Chautauqua and Mayville both have specialty, antique and gift shops, including Webb’s Candy Factory, Reverie Creamery, the Art Loft, Chautauqua Ironworks and more. Lighthouse Point Grocery is a small food shop in Mayville. North Harmony has the Ashville General Store.



Recreation & Entertainment

Outdoor activities and areas are the attractions here. The Heron, which is “dedicated to land stewardship and creative ingenuity,” is one of the places to see in Sherman. The Heron hosts events like Night Lights at the Heron, in which participants walk a lighted one-mile trail lined with artistic expressions. The Great Blue Heron Musical Festival is also held there in Sherman every year.



Transportation & Traffic

The well-traveled Southern Tier Expressway (Interstate 86 and Route 17) passes through the northern part of Sherman.



Pros & Cons

Sherman is a small town with plenty of scenic open space. You’re close to busier Chautauqua and the lovely Chautauqua Lake and its many attractions.
