19th Ward - Rochester, NY

Overview

The 19th Ward, in southwest Rochester, is the largest neighborhood in the city, with more than 20,000 residents. The neighborhood is close to Genesee Valley Park, the Genesee River, the University of Rochester, the Erie Canal and the Greater Rochester International Airport, and fairly close to Rochester Institute of Technology. The area calls itself “Urban by Choice,” and has the oldest continuously running neighborhood association in Rochester.

This multi-racial area has many longtime families, and professionals who work at UR.


Essentials

The 19th Ward has a variety of small, family-run bars and restaurants, mechanics, banks, a few small grocers and some shopping, including national chains like Rite Aid. There’s a Top’s grocery store on West Avenue, near Rochester Gas & Electric Co.’s headquarters. The Arnett Branch Library, at 310 Arnett Blvd., serves the neighborhood. A post office is at 525 Thurston Road, and others are on the UR campus.



Recreation & Entertainment

Along with the neighborhood bars and coffee shops, entertainment can be found at various events on the UR campus. Genesee Valley Park has a large outdoor pool that is heavily used in the summer, as well as an ice rink popular in the winter. The neighborhood has an annual tour of homes and holds a Square Fair in June.



Transportation & Traffic

The area is served by three exits off nearby Interstate 390, which heads north-south. Bus service is readily available here, as in most parts of the city. Thurston Road, Genesee Street and Chili Avenue are among the most traveled, each with its own shopping areas.



Pros & Cons

This area has quite a mix of people, from university professors to some of the poorest in Rochester. The neighborhood association is very strong.
